Our Putney counselling rooms are on Upper Richmond Road, a short walk from both East Putney and Putney stations. Help is a charity, and we offer counselling in Putney and across London to adults who want support with anxiety, low mood, bereavement, stress, relationships or the after-effects of difficult experiences. Never had counselling before? That’s very common, and we’ll explain everything as we go.
Fees follow a sliding scale, so you pay according to your income. All our counsellors are registered with BACP, UKCP or an equivalent professional body and work under regular, expert supervision. You can refer yourself, so there’s no need for a GP appointment first.
What to expect
First, an assessment
Your journey with us starts with an initial assessment, which costs £25. You’ll talk with an experienced assessor about what’s been difficult and what you’d like from counselling. They’ll also ask about any preferences. Our clinical team then matches you with a suitable counsellor in Putney , and most clients start within two weeks.
Face-to-face counselling in Putney
These rooms are well placed if you live in Putney, Wandsworth, Southfields, Roehampton or Barnes. Your sessions will be 50 minutes long, on the same day and at the same time each week.
Being in the room with your therapist can help you feel properly heard. It also gives you a space that has nothing to do with home or work, which some people find makes it easier to talk honestly.
Confidentiality
What you say in your sessions is confidential. Your counsellor would only share it in rare circumstances, if someone’s safety was seriously at risk. They’ll explain exactly what this means at your first session.
How long counselling takes
There isn’t a fixed course. Most Help clients come for several months, and some choose to continue for longer. Together with your counsellor, you’ll review how things are going from time to time.
Fees
We keep counselling affordable by charging on a sliding scale linked to income. We’ll agree your fee at the initial assessment. If you’re still find it hard to afford attending weekly, talk to us and we’ll see what else we can do. Visit our Fees page for more.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get to Help’s East Putney counselling location?
East Putney station (District line) is about 3 minutes’ walk away. Putney station (South Western Railway) is about 4 minutes on foot. Enter through the main doors on Upper Richmond Road and go up to the second floor.
Is there step-free access in the building?
Our rooms are on the second floor. If you have mobility needs, please tell us when you book so we can confirm access or offer another location or online sessions. Check your journey with TfL’s step-free journey planner, as station access varies.
Is there parking nearby?
There’s pay-and-display parking on nearby side streets, as well as car parks at the local shopping centres. Putney is well served by trains, the Tube and buses, so public transport is often easier.
Do I need to come to Putney counselling centre for every session, or can some be online?
Once your time, day and location is agreed it will stay the same. You can change to online counselling if preferred, but Help is not able to combine or alternate them week to week.
How quickly can I start counselling?
No GP referral is needed. Book your initial assessment online, or complete our Refer Yourself form if you’d like us to contact you. You can usually get an assessment on most weekdays, and most people are seeing a counsellor within two weeks.
What if there’s no therapist available near East Putney?
Sometimes all our Putney counsellors are booked. If so, you can wait for a space, see a counsellor at our nearby Fulham & Putney Bridge location, or begin with online sessions. We’ll go through each option with you at your assessment.
